It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of our esteemed Board Member, Mr Tarik Beden.

Mr Tarik Beden was the President of the Iraqi Community Cultural Association of SA and the Deputy Chair of the Middle Eastern Communities Council of SA. Since arriving in Australia as a refugee with his family in 2002, Tarik has assisted the Iraqi Community to settle in South Australia. He was a journalist of considerable repute in Iraq and Jordan, and has continued to work as a journalist in Australia. In addition, he has been a long term volunteer of AMRC and AMRC Board Member for 13 years. Tarik was an integral part of our organization and played a significant role in shaping AMRC’s direction and community engagement. He brought invaluable insights, wisdom, and dedication, leaving a lasting impact on all of us who had the privilege of working alongside him.

Beyond his professional contributions, Tarik was a cherished colleague and friend to many of us. He will be remembered not only for his accomplishments but also for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to supporting others. “I really feel happy when I help someone from my community, especially new arrivals. It makes my day if I can do something good for people.” In Our Own Voices – Tarik’s own story. He always acknowledged Australia as a country that gave him understanding of the meaning of life and where he and his family were happy and safe. However, in his own words when he shared his story for the book in 2018 he said: “It’s still in my dream to return to live in Iraq, and I do say to myself that one day I will go back permanently.” He died in Iraq last week.

During this difficult time, our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Tarik’s family, friends and loved ones. We recognize that this loss is deeply felt by all who knew him, and we offer our support and condolences to those mourning this profound loss.

As we honour Tarik’s memory, let us also remember his legacy of helping others and the impact he made on his community and our organization and the lives of many. He will be greatly missed, but his positive energy, commitment and dedication will continue to inspire us in our work and endeavors.

In remembrance of Tarik Beden, let us take a moment to reflect on his contributions and the positive influence he had on our community.
