Good news story: Zuhra Ahmadi
Zuhra Ahmadi arrived in Adelaide with her husband and 11-year-old son in April this year. Zuhra is from Afghanistan but her family had to leave the country when she was only three years old. Since then, she has lived in Iran and later in India. She trained as a teacher and taught for 11 years in Iran and for one year in India.
Zuhra took up painting and sketching at the age of 18. She studied only one term of art classes in Iran, so in reality she is a self-taught artist. Additionally, she learnt the skills of traditional leatherwork and bag making.
She loves to paint nature of any kind – mountains, countryside, animals, rivers, trees and people. She is excited by the nature she has seen in her short time in South Australia and has begun to capture it in her artwork. Zuhra sees her artwork as a way of expressing herself and as a therapeutic way of helping her emotionally to deal with the stress of migrating and settling in a new country. Painting makes her feel calm and helps her feel better.
In the future, as her English improves, she wishes to enrol in formal art classes to improve her skills and to later teach art to students. In the meantime, she is inspired to paint beautiful scenes of nature.
Welcome to South Australia Zuhra!
