AMRC celebrating SA Refugee Week with refugee achievers…
Joseph Ndjeka
Since Joseph Ndjeka arrived in Mount Gambier, he said that he wanted to become a nurse. That dream came true in recent months when he graduated from his nursing degree and began working as a nurse in Mount Gambier.
Joseph grew up and lived in a refugee camp in Malawi for 10 years before coming to Australia. After arriving in Mount Gambier, the AMRC helped Joseph enrol in the Intensive English Program to help improve his English and adapt to the Australian education system. In 2016, he enrolled in Foundation Studies at UniSA to prepare him for his nursing degree. In 2019, Joseph completed his nursing degree and in 2020 became employed by the Mount Gambier Hospital as a registered nurse. This was a great achievement for Joseph, who in May 2021, invited hundreds of people from across the Congolese and Mount Gambier community to celebrate his graduation in a local hall.
“Education changes everything,” he said. “Had I not focused on my education, I would not be where I am right now.
