Women Making Connections in the North
A group of 25 newly arrived, young parents set up a Big Sister Support Group in the Northern Area MRC on Thursdays. Initially it was attended by Afghan women, but now the meeting has attracted other parents from Burma and Bhutan for friendship, information sharing, preparing for volunteering and job pathways. Their ages range from 21 to 34. Some are attending AMEP classes at the centre. Guest speakers have included a RAH female doctor and a female chemist who facilitated Q & A sessions. Some of the topics raised included family planning, COVID concerns, family health and wellbeing, medication and parenting skills. They plan to organise activities for social enterprise such as cooking new cuisine and sewing.
