Stories of Achieving New Australians

Photo: Mr Sediqi with young cricket team members.

AMRC work experience student Mr Sediqi used his skills to support many families of Afghan background with young children, who arrived in SA less than three years ago, to settle through the sport avenue. This has included forming a cricket team for young children of Afghan background. He approached SA Cricket Association, who provided the team with uniforms and a coach to teach the children in an eight week block. The team is also assisted by two parent volunteers and consists of 14 members aged 5-10 years old. The team practices every Sunday at the Turkish Islamic School grounds located at Elizabeth East.

He notes that both parents and children have responded positively to the team formation, stating that: “My kids are so much happier and look forward to the weekend session of cricket,” and “I hope to play for the Australian cricket team when I grow up.” He wishes to thank supporters of the cricket team including Mr Mansoor Hashimi.
