Sewing up a storm at the Northern Area MRC
Every Friday, women from Bhutanese, Burmese and African backgrounds come together to learn sewing techniques from Bhutanese instructor Guna Bhandari, who has over 20 years of experience in teaching students, and both men and women during his time in a refugee camp. “To be able to create a dress of your own is a thing of beauty,” he said. Passing on his dressmaking skills has inspired a growing number of participants to join the group and create their own dresses. “I have always wanted to sew, but never had the chance. Now I have the opportunity to learn and make new friends,” one participant said.
The machines were initially purchased by women of Bhutanese background and generously donated to the sewing group that is assisted by Australian volunteer Maria from the Salisbury Stitchers club. If you would like to join the group or donate a sewing machine, contact Northern Area MRC Manager Michelle Dieu on (08) 8256 5700 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
