55 newly arrived primary school children from a diversity of cultures received an educational backpack kindly donated by the Tanunda Lutheran School. AMRC representatives Van Bawi Tinhlawng and Yazdan Jawshani were delighted to accept the 55 backpacks on behalf of the AMRC at the school on Friday 17 November 2017.

Senior Case Manager, Yazdan, informed the gathering of over 300 people on how the backpacks aim to assist the transitioning period of children starting school in a new country and also educate students preparing the backpacks to understand the needs of new arrivals by ensuring they have essential items to support their learning in the classroom including a water bottle, workbook, stationary and lunch box. Each backpack contains a welcoming note from the students who prepared them, demonstrating how young people can help foster an inclusive, embracing, understanding and caring society to provide new arrival children with an equal opportunity at school. Older young people in their teenage years were also gifted with a $20 voucher, while pre-school children were given Christmas presents sponsored by Variety the Children’s Charity of South Australia.

The distribution of Educational Backpacks and Christmas gifts was officiated by Hon Minister Zoe Bettison MP, Minister for the Status of Women and Multicultural Affairs; Ms Maria Dimopoulos, Chairperson, Harmony Alliance: Migrant and Refugee Women for Change; Ms Fiona Mort, Director of Office for Women; and Ms Shirley Capper, Representative of Variety the Children’s Charity of South Australia.

The joy on children’s faces was visible, as they rapidly unwrapped their gifts and opened their backpacks, eager to show their parents. To become involved in the backpack initiative, contact Michelle Dieu on (08) 8217 9505 or email
